In 2017, the value of Swedish exports of food increased by 7.5% to total SEK 49 billion. In a proposal that has received the backing of MPs, the government now intends to invest SEK 48 million to promote food exports further. With Sweden showing a food trade deficit of some SEK 50 billion, Rural Affairs Minister Sven Erik Bucht’s hope is that the investment will help create more jobs in rural areas.
An analysis conducted by Business Sweden indicates there is potential for Swedish food exports to Britain, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong and Japan. Fast-paced companies in combination with environmental awareness, good animal husbandry, high level of safety and low level use of antibiotics in livestock will pave the way for export success, finds the analysis.
