Norway may ban the Chinese telecoms giant Huawei from expanding 5G technology, citing the risk of espionage. So far, the US and the UK, among others, have stopped the Chinese from building 5G due to suspicions of espionage via the telecoms network. Norwegian Justice Minister Tor Mikkel Wara told Reuters on Wednesday that the issue was of highest priority.
In Sweden, the issue is also being investigated and the government along with the agencies affected are looking at the players that are to be granted permits to expand the 5G network.
“Of course Huawei is one of the players that will be discussed,” says Carl-Martin Vikingsson, press secretary for Minister for Digitalisation Peter Eriksson (Green).
Since Sweden currently has a caretaker government, the situation is not straightforward. According to the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) there is no decision to block Huawei at the moment. “I just know that the government is looking at this issue,” says Peter Ekstedt, head of press at PTS.
