On World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2016, we, in the media industry, published a joint call for support for the open internet and as a protest against Telia’s gains from global media giants. Today, two years later, we must reissue the call, since no changes have been made in the past two years, write 26 Swedish publicists in Dagens Industri (DI) today.
Telis still cooperates intimately with Facebook and other global giants and provides them with benefits. Even if customers’ surfing credit runs out, Telia allows access to the social media giants but not to the Swedish media companies’ pages.
This is in conflict with the rules of internet neutrality and in December 2016, the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority decided Telia should stop. Telia has appealed the decision. We call for the state to take responsibility and tighten the regulations, they write.
