According to the European Commission, the major players such as Apple’s App Store, Amazon and booking.com are abusing their power in relation to smaller companies that are dependent on the platforms and this is a power relationship that angers EU Affairs and Trade Minister Ann Linde (S).
The issue was discussed during the previous meeting on the competitive powers of the EU’s companies. According to minutes from the meeting, the major technology companies are now being forced to simplify their conditions and agreements. This is in order for smaller companies to understand what applies when doing deals with the platforms.
“We have concluded that companies who use the online services are completely dependent on which rules apply for the platforms. There are several rules today that make it very difficult for small and medium-sized companies to work,” says Ann Linde.
Among other things, the EU wants the platforms to account for their ranking systems, which can have a big impact on small companies’ sales.
