Facebook is expanding its data centre in Luleå to almost double its current size, which will make the facility one of the largest in the world.
The media giant established its first data centre in Luleå in 2011, which was the company’s first investment outside of the US.
“We have ensured that we have land and energy so that they can grow here,” says Niklas Nordström (S), mayor of Luleå. Natural cold, which keeps energy consumption down, access to hydroelectric power, relatively low energy prices and a university that provides labour are some of the reasons it has chosen Luleå.
Niklas Nordström says it could lead to 100 new jobs at the data centre.
