With container ships becoming larger, the Port of Gothenburg, which is Sweden’s largest and only port with direct shipping to key export markets, no longer accepts the largest vessels without limitations. Therefore it was a huge setback for the port when a record investment of SEK 4 billion to deepen the shipping lane was not included when the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) submitted its proposal for a new national plan for the transport system.
In a letter to Tomas Eneroth, minister for infrastructure, signed by the CEO’s of AB Volvo, Volvo Cars, ball-bearing maker SKF, property giant Castellum and Stena Rederi, the executives urge the government to ensure state funding in order to deepen the port.
