The launch of the 5G standard for mobile phones is going – despite the US’s efforts to put a spanner in the works for market leader Huawei – faster than expected, writes Ericsson in June’s Mobility report. The market report on the telecoms world is presented twice a year.
According to Ericsson’s last forecast, in November, there would be 1.5 billion [sic] 5G accounts by the end of 2024. Six months on, this figure has been raised by 400 million, to 1.9 billion. This is based on the rolling out of 5G going faster than the industry had hoped.
Fredrik Jejdling, head of the Network business segment, points out that 5G will have a key role, even beyond digitalisation of industry, via, for example, the Internet of Things. However he says, “The total benefit of 5G can only be reaped if it creates a stable ecosystem in which technology, legislation, security and industry players work together.”
