In 2012-2013, around the time production of Gripen C/D fighter jets for the Swedish Air Force and export customers such as the Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa and Thailand ceased, the Defence Materiel Administration, or FMV, ordered 14 Gripen fuselages from Saab.
The fuselages have never been used, but FMV says it was important “to keep production going” prior to the launch of production of the Gripen E. FMV is unwilling to state just how much this cost tax payers, but Svenska Dagbladet estimates that the order was in the region of several hundred million kronor.
FMV has now told SvD that the cost of the fuselages is included in the total cost of the Gripen E project and it is unable to comment further since the Gripen E contract is classified.
