Saab claims that around 1,500 jobs in the defence industry could be lost, if Sweden were to introduce new controls on exports of light weapons in order to prevent arms transfers.
In effect, five of Saab’s weapons systems would be affected by the proposed new rules. They are: the Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle, the AT4 and the NLAW, the RBS 56 anti-tank missile and the RBS man-portable defence system.
Saab information director Sebastian Carlsson says the company’s sales would fall by SEK 1 billion/year. In 2017, the company reported sales of SEK 17 billion.
