Arlanda Airport continues to grow and is now on the way to overtaking Danish Kastrup as the Nordic region’s leading airport. For its owner, state company Swedavia, the increase means it has launched plans for another runway.
“There is a very long and complex process before a new runway is in place and therefore we have started the preparatory work,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, CEO of Swedavia. He hopes that Arlanda will overtake Kastrup within a few years and describes it as crucial for business that the airport can continue to grow. “Half of our GDP comes from the export industry and we are completely dependent on good accessibility to and from the rest of the world,” says Abrahamsson.
Swedavia’s plans are in line with the proposal that former Social Democrat minister Anders Sundström presented in a major aviation inquiry, which was handed to the government two years ago. The proposal to expand Arlanda comes in the middle of the debate over the climate impact of aviation, however, Anders Sundström does not believe that there will be less aviation, but there needs to be a focus on renewable fuel.
